Tourist information

Nerja is a beachfront resort on the Costa del Sol, in the province of Andalusia of Spain. It is the 1st resort city going away from Malaga to not be overlooked by big ugly concrete resorts and is located in the eye-catching foothills of the Sierra Almijara hills. Situated on the western end of the Costa del Sol, Nerja has all the ingredients to charm any visitor. Its annual average temperature level, about twenty degrees Celsius, the gorgeous mountain surroundings of Málaga's La Axarquía province, in addition to a rugged shoreline and high cliffs, are only a couple of its tourist attractions.

Around town

The old neighborhood of the town is still practically unchanged with slim, winding roads, whitewashed buildings with wrought iron terraces overflowing with geraniums, on which a canary can in some cases be heard singing. Travellers can rent a horse-drawn carriage and check out the town’s most colourful roads and tourist attractions. When in Nerja, the 17th Century Church of El Salvador and the Gardens of Capistrano Playa are must-see. There are lots of eating places and coffee bars here to select from, and plenty of charming squares where you can sit and watch the world pass by.

Museo de Nerja

Nerja’s museum preserves the history of the town from the cave dwellers of Paleolithic times to the tourist expansion years of the '60s and is really worth an hour or so of your time. Highlights of this museum are artifacts discovered in the Cuerva de Nerja that range from the thought-provoking skeleton of an adult cave dweller to the fascinatingly mundane prehistoric cheese meal.

Things to do on Vacation in Nerja

In the town of Nerja itself, you cannot fail to investigate the 17th century church of El Salvador and the conjoining Gardens of Capistrano Playa, which run down the hill all the way to the legendary Burriana Beach, a blue flagged fine sandy beach. Here, all the sea sports are available, particularly diving, wind-surfing and water skiing. Only 3 kilometers from Nerja are the Nerja Caves, the 3rd most explored attraction in Spain. There is a fascinating cave network, adorned with paints up to 20,000 years old. One of the caves is so huge that it has been developed into a concert hall for the summer months! If you have chosen to take a self-catering vacation home or apartment in Nerja, the pescaito frito (fried fish) is an important local delicacy to try.

Weather in Nerja, Spain

Due to the layout of the hills and sea, Nerja enjoys an unique climate, resulting in the province being somewhat sunnier than the majority of the Costa del Sol. It has more than 200 sunny days per year, and average temperature levels in August reach almost 33°C. Just like the rest of the Costa del Sol, winter season temperature levels are normally around 12°C, and hardly getting below.
